Traditional Loading on the HCG Diet?
The traditional way of “loading” for this diet in my opinion is – NOTHING IS OFF LIMITS! Eat what you want, when you want & try not to get sick! LOL! I took full advantage of the load during my very first round of the Drops. I think I gained 8 pounds in 2 days. I know disgusting, right?
There is such thing as a clean load! What is it?
A “clean load” for the Drops diet is loading on high fat foods without stuffing yourself full of carbs and sugars. Focus mostly on fats, proteins, and veggies. Much like a regular “ketogenic” style of eating. There’s lots of foods I like to eat when I’m clean loading. I tend to go for the fattier meats like bacon, pork chops, chicken wings, steak with lots of butter, mayo, MCT oil, coconut oil, or olive oil. I put butter on everything! Veggies like broccoli and cauliflower, sour cream, avocados, and olives with feta. These are just some examples of what I eat during a clean load.
Some foods I’ve learned to avoid when loading:
ALL SUGAR. I don’ do fruit or grains. I do this because I know now after being in ketosis for 2 years, how my body responds to these types of foods. I’m flat out miserable so I’ll be avoiding this as much as possible.
Which way of loading is right? Is one or the other better?
I honestly do not believe one way or the other is better or “right” for that matter. Here are some reasons you may choose to clean load instead of traditional loading.
#1 Loading on sugars and carbs after being in ketosis for so long may trigger previous eating disorders. I’m a sugar addict. There, I said it. I admit that I am addicted to sugar! “But Toni, how can you live a ketogenic lifestyle addicted to sugar?”. When I do a traditional load it resets my mind back into thinking about my binge eating mentality and it definitely wasn’t a healthy place to be. It took me a long time to get away from the carbs and sugars and I feel like a traditional load makes it way harder for me when starting a round of drops. I want your experience with the drops to be a good one. I feel like a traditional load of eating chocolate and cake all day long may make things a little harder for you to get through your first phase 2 experience.
If you’re like me and have difficulty controlling the amounts of carbs and sugar you eat when you do eat them, you might consider doing a clean load. Cravings are powerful forces. Avoid them out of the gate to be successful.
#2- Get into Ketosis and Fat Burning Mode Faster
If you’ve already been in ketosis before starting this challenge, you already know the benefits of fat burning. Have a few higher carb fruits on your loading days if you’re already in ketosis. But choosing to do a clean load over a traditional load will get you into ketosis much faster. I am always in ketosis after the first VLCD (very low calorie diet) day now. I kind of feel like this helps me make the best use of time while on the hCG Diet because my body is already burning fats right from the get go instead of having a bunch of carbs and glycogen stores to burn through the first several days.
#3- First Few Days of Diet Feel Much Easier– Far Less Cravings and Hunger
With clean loading, I feel like the first few days of your round will go much smoother and be much more manageable instead of having carb and sugar withdrawals. I notice when I eat he sugary foods my hunger is raging out of control the first couple days and no one likes to feel that way.I’m living proof you don’t have to over-do it on loading days.If you don’t load like Dr. Simeon’s suggests “with pastries and high fat foods” will it ruin your chances for a full metabolism reset? No. I don’t believe so. I have done 3 full rounds with no sugar during loading and 2 short rounds with sugar loading. I do believe I have an excellent metabolism now. I do attribute this to exercise as well, it has been super easy to maintain my final weight loss after my last full round 2 years ago.I have absolutely no concern whatsoever that this won’t be maintainable for life. If you choose to load clean, I feel my results prove that this certainly won’t harm your experience and may likely even make it more manageable for you.
But Please Do LOAD
Don’t take this train of thought and think that loading is essential. I do eat high calorie/high fat foods during my loads. My loading days are still super high calories and high fat grams. My last short round of drops I consumed almost 3000 calories and 300g of fat in one day.
I do think as Dr. Simeon’s said that if you don’t load properly by getting enough fat into your system, you will feel hungry and weak and possible have slower losses.Loading however you want is a free choice and you should be entitled to load how you want with no guilt!
